Research Fields	I have studied history and the political economy in southern Africa, mainly in South Africa. South Africa under the apartheid government was often not considered an African country, but I came to realize that South Africa has been becoming an African country since the transition to the new regime in 1994. I am always trying to observe and capture the state in recent decades from historical perspective covering hundreds of years. I have also been involved in works on broad-based nationalism, human security, development and development assistance in Asia and Africa.
